There comes a time in just about everyone’s life where they just need a change. Sure, plenty of people are more than happy to spend every single day doing the same things, in the same places with the same people. But that simply might not be you. For some people, there’s nothing quite like the call to adventure, pulling you away from your normal life and into something much bigger and more interesting. Now, you might think that the kind of change that you need in your life could be a small one. Something like a new job or moving to a new town might be enough for you. But what if you want something a little more significant? If you want a really big change then why not think about really getting away? The idea of moving to an entirely different country can be incredibly scary for a lot of people, but it can also be incredibly exciting with the potential for an incredible new adventure! With that in mind, here are a few of the very best reasons to get out into the world and see what it has to offer you!
Exploring a new culture
In the western world, it’s a real tragedy just how locked in we are to our own perspectives and attitudes. Most of us only speak one language, and we’re lucky if we’re taught the history of just about any other cultures most of the time. It’s hardly surprising why so many westerners, particularly here in England and in America, end up feeling as though they’re the very centre of the universe. However, that’s obviously about as far from the truth as it’s possible to be. The reality is that the world is filled to the brim with vibrant, exciting cultures that you might never have even thought about. By moving somewhere new then you’re going to get to experience the culture of that place And not just the tourist attractions either, you’ll get to see what it’s really like and soak up the atmosphere of somewhere totally fresh.
Meeting new people
Of course, a culture means nothing without its people, and the people that you meet are going to be one of the very best things about living in a new place. When you spend your whole life somewhere, it’s easy to end up only really interacting with the same people or at least the same kinds of people. Whereas, if you spend time living in another country, you’re not going to have any choice but to find yourself interacting with people from an entirely different background to you. Of course, it’s important to understand that, no matter what kinds of differences you might to the people around you, it’s the ways in which you’re the same that really matter. However, you can still learn a great deal from people from other cultures. They will have totally different perspectives on life that you might really benefit from. You should always be trying to learn from those around you and being surrounded by people from a totally different background can be incredibly enriching.
Learning more about yourself
While there are a whole lot of incredibly positive things about staying in one place, it can often stand in the way of you being able to actually grow as a person. After all, if you’re in one place forever, then you’re always going to have some degree of context that lets you define yourself. If you take yourself out of that situation, then you’re going to find yourself without any previous context, which means that you have no choice but to create a totally fresh image of yourself. You will no longer have influencing factors like your family and your personal history colouring the kind of person that you’re going to be. Instead, you can simply figure that out on your own. That kind of self-understanding is something that many people carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Of course, for all of the important emotional reasons why you might want to live in a different country, there are plenty of practical reasons to do it too. One of the most significant is financial. If you’re living in England, then you know just how tough it can be to buy or rent any kind of home. But if you were to move to somewhere like Singapore, HDB room rental can be incredibly good value. The same is true for places all over the world, and it’s worth extending your search across the waters for that reason alone. Sure, you shouldn’t let money alone make that kind of decision for you, but it’s almost certainly going to be a factor and one that you should consider carefully.
Learning to be independent
If you spend your entire life living in one place, then it can be all too easy to become dependent on the people around you. The most common way this happens is people living in their hometown end up never really getting the kind of full independence of their parents that they might otherwise have. By moving to a new country, you have no choice but to become completely independent. Sure, you don’t want to isolate yourself but being able to stand on your own two feet without relying on anyone else can be one of the most empowering feelings in the world.
Now, even if the idea of living in a new country is incredibly tempting to you, that doesn’t mean that it’s not also going to be an incredibly scary prospect. After all, moving to somewhere totally new means leaving everything that’s safe and familiar behind. And sure, it’s not going to be the right choice for everyone. But if you’re the kind of person who’s just itching to get out into the world and see what it has to offer, then it’s worth at least considering it. If you need a change and you haven’t figured out how to make that happen yet, a real change of scenery might be just what the doctor ordered.
