My latest #BossBabe is the wonderful Katie Weir. A PR extraordinaire, she has recently launched her own company and already has a queue of fabulous businesses just waiting to work with her. She’s also recently co-founded a company with Emily Jane Williams, another amazing #BossBabe that I interviewed recently. So, let’s find out what Miss Weir is all about…
Tell me a little bit about your background.
My parents brought me up in The Cotswolds, a wonderful place of fields and fresh air! Although you always want you don’t have, so growing up I craved the city life and I went on to study International Fashion Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan!
It was an incredible 4 years and took me on a year in industry to work at now Wacoal in Desborough as a PR and Marketing Assistant! Before I graduated, they offered me a full time position as PR Assistant to which I jumped for joy! This was the start of my PR career, to which I am eternally thankful.
Tell me a little bit about yourself and your company.
I feel I am the epitome of a PR girl; I like to talk a lot, I like to drink cocktails, I like to go to parties, meet celebrities but ultimately I love to open a magazine or a webpage and see my brand featured! For me, there is no better perk of the job!
I have always wanted my own business, I was unsure if it was going to be a lingerie shop or a PR business. 6 months ago I returned to England after an 18 month sting in Kuwait working for the Middle East’s most successful franchiser – Alshaya. I looked after American Eagle Outiftters and Jack Wills PR and Social Media accounts for 11 countries across the Middle East and North Africa.
As I sat at my desk in Kuwait, making waves and being recognized by the VP of Fashion and Footwear – I knew that life there was not for me although I loved what I was doing. So, I returned home, unemployed but with confirmation that I could do my job and do it well in both the UK and the Middle East. I was filled with confidence and with the support of my family – I set up Weir Wonderful.
What’s the best thing about your job, and why?
For me, it has to be working with clients as Katie Weir, not Katie from Freya, Katie from AEO but Katie who own Weir Wonderful! As previously mentioned, seeing coverage in publications has to be the best part of my job!
What’s the most difficult part about your job, and why?
I would say getting used to being a one woman band has been a challenge! I think my mum has received many more calls of ‘what do you think to this’ or ‘does this sound right?’
Being self-employed, you can miss the office community but at the same time you are forever grateful that you can make a thousand coffees in a day without any judgement!
What do you think sets you aside from your competition?
I have both UK and Middle Eastern experience. If a client would like to reach the affluent Arab market, I am your girl! I pride myself on a no BS attitude. I’m a PR which likes to live, breathe, eat and wear the brand they are representing. I have to 100% believe in them and their ethos.
What are you most proud of about your job?
I am most proud of being motivated and fearless when it came to going out and doing it for myself!
Who or what inspires you?
Cliché, but my mum inspires me. Recently many things have happened to me to which I have thought, ‘Mum was right’. Mums are powerful, strong women who only ever want the best for their child even if that is at the surrender of their own ideals. So yes, Mum, you inspire me!
What trends are you loving this season, and why?
As much as I love to read Vogue, I can’t say that I am a trend follower. Having a curvaceous figure, the trends don’t often work in my favour, however, Nautical is always a clear winner for me in Summer! Not to mention, metallic as I am a magpie with chrome nails, rose gold trainers and mermaid inspired clutches!
If you could impart some wisdom to your fifteen year old self, what would you say?
I would definitely tell her to go get a proper bra fitting, to not be hung up on that guy who called you ‘thunder thighs’ and to listen to your mum!
What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you, and who gave it to you?
To get a professional bra fitting on my first day at the Freya lingerie head office! It was the Marketing Manager at the time – Jenny Hunter. We spent about 10 minutes guessing what my bra size would be and I came out a 32G after walking in a 36DD.
You might think this is a very material piece of advice, but the confidence boost that came from it and the ability to wear more items in more wardrobe not to mention looking after my boobs in the best way 10 years on are priceless.
If someone wanted to follow in your career path, what advice would you give to them?
I would say – go for it but be organized, have a plan, a mission and understand how you are going to get to where you want to be. When working for yourself you must work with purpose as otherwise it can be very easy to lose your way and not understand the value of your worth to your clients, self-motivation is key.
Describe to me your perfect work day!
It starts with an almond milk flat white. I like to be out and about so my perfect day would be walking to the train station to hop on the East Mids to London where I would have a full diary of meetings to see press, influencers and clients. It would mean a lot of running around and a few schedule changes but for me, that’s what I love about a working day! I would then treat myself to a Vegan Rainbow wrap from Pret as I get the train home listening to Zayn Mailks new album.
When you’re not busy working, how do you relax?
I love to walk, relaxing to me is a walk in the country side with my Pomeranian, Cosmo. But I also just love to just sleep!
What’s your favourite drink/cocktail?
It has to be a Pornstar Martini!
What music do you listen to when you really need to get stuff done!?
The Weeknd Triology album is my go to, he chills me out and I just focus.
Who would you like to work with, if anyone, and why?
Michelle Mone, the lingerie PR Queen ! I would love to spend a week with her, I hear she’s a tough woman and I have read her book. I have taken an ounce of inspiration but I do feel she might need my help as it has gone a little quiet on the Ultimo front! Michelle? Do you need me!?
What’s coming up for you/your company?
I have an awesome IT client – Tisski. We have gone from strength to strength when it comes to their social media strategy and I am excited to see where we go in the next 6 months! I am also very excited to announce my new PR client – Reckless Wolf lingerie! I cannot wait to get back into the wonderful world of lingerie!
Aside from Weir Wonderful, I have partnered with my good friend Emily Jane Williams who owns The emJ Company to create Budhi, an online one stop shop for cruelty free, plant based and ethical products! We are super excited for the launch at the end of June!
